Designing and establishing new agroforestry systems

One research and development component of TRAILS project is aimed at setting up experimental agroecological plots to support the transformation of the oil palm monoculture model to a complex agroforestry system associating oil palms and forest species.

The experiments also concern the adoption of an organic palm oil production model (i.e. without chemical inputs).

The experimental plots have different landscape and functional schemes, whether the reforestation of riparian corridors is to foster the circulation of wildlife, or the introduction of forest species in association with oil palms.

The three pillars of sustainability (environmental, social, and economic) are mobilised in this phase of the design and establishment of agroforestry systems.

MOPP plantation is contributing

The experimental plots are provided to the research teams by MOPP, for the establishment of planting/reforestation schemes as well as for the monitoring of agronomic and ecological measurements.

The plant nurseries dedicated to reforestation activities as well as the programmes for the reforestation of the project sites are managed by the communities living around the MOPP plantation, in particular by the women’s associations organised under the aegis of the NGO HUTAN.
