Socio-economic impacts of agroecological transition

TRAILS project analyses the socio-economic impact of the agroecological transition at several levels.

At the plantation level

The costs and benefits of agroforestry systems are assessed. The studies explore the economic opportunities linked to the reduction in production costs (energy, inputs) and to the resilience of the agroforestry systems introduced, in comparison with the performances of oil palm monoculture plantations.

At the value chain level

The economic analysis integrates the opportunities to promote the quality of products derived from agroecological production methods (i.e. “sustainable palm oil”, “organic palm oil”, or any other label likely to give added value in relation to conventional production methods).

 At the territorial level

The goal is to identify the potential generated by ecosystem restoration. For the local communities, this potential can be directly monetary, through the income derived from payments for environmental services. It can also be indirect, through ecotourism activities, for example. Finally, it can be non-monetary, through improvements in the quality of the territory’s natural resources (water, soil, vegetation).
